Czech Republic beer consumption shifts toward home drinking

Beer consumption patterns in the Czech Republic are undergoing a significant shift as more people choose to drink at home rather than in pubs or restaurants. According to data from the Czech Brewers and Malters Association, the share of draught beer consumed in public venues has dropped to 28%, while 72% of beer is now purchased in shops for private consumption.

Total average beer consumption per capita reached a historic low of 121 liters last year. Factors contributing to this decline include high prices in hospitality venues, a growing preference for non-alcoholic options among younger generations, and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which encouraged a trend of 'cocooning' or staying at home for entertainment.

In the context of sports, such as football, beer remains a central element of the fan experience in the Czech Republic, though the setting is increasingly split between traditional pubs and home viewing. Martin Smejkal, marketing director of Staropramen, noted that beer is an integral part of the social ritual of supporting a team, whether shared with friends in a pub or enjoyed while watching a broadcast at home.
