Czech Republic begins I/53 road reconstruction project

The Road and Motorway Directorate has officially commenced a three-year reconstruction project of the I/53 road between Lechovice and Pohořelice. The project aims to transform more than 20 kilometers of the route connecting Znojmo to Brno to improve safety and traffic flow.

Key upgrades include converting sections into a 2+1 alternating three-lane system, constructing five new grade-separated junctions at Oleksovice, Mackovice, Trnové Pole, Miroslav, and Suchohrdly, and adding a 640-meter climbing lane near Branišovice. The project also involves building eight new bridges on the I/53, five on junction branches, a railway bridge, and two noise barriers totaling 518 meters.

Minister of Transport Ivan Bednárik noted that the investment is necessary to address high accident rates and dangerous overtaking conditions. Additionally, the modernized road is intended to support the future expansion of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Station by facilitating the transport of materials for new nuclear blocks. The first section, from Pohořelice to Trnové Pole, is expected to be operational within 14 months.
