Czech Republic road infrastructure modernization

Overview

The Czech Republic has initiated several major road infrastructure projects aimed at improving safety and traffic flow.

In September 2026, the Road and Motorway Directorate commenced a three-year reconstruction of the I/53 road between Lechovice and Pohořelice. This project involves converting sections to a 2+1 alternating three-lane system, constructing new junctions, and building multiple bridges and noise barriers. Minister of Transport Ivan Bednárik stated the investment is necessary to address high accident rates and to support the future expansion of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Station.

Concurrently, preparatory works have begun for the modernization of the I/23 road between Třebíč and Vladislav. This phase includes relocating a railway bridge and constructing a water culvert. The full reconstruction, scheduled for 2027–2028, will focus on a four-kilometer stretch to mitigate high accident rates on a section that handles over 11,000 vehicles daily. Planned upgrades include road widening, new turning lanes, a pedestrian underpass, and noise barriers.
