Czech Republic commemorates 1918 independence with historical reenactments
Historical commemorations are being held to mark the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. In Nová Bystřice, a steam train operated by Gepard Express will transport visitors to celebrate the occasion. The event features over 100 performers reenacting life during the transition from the Habsburg Monarchy to the Czechoslovak Republic, including displays of military life, historical technology, and period fashion. A double of the first president, Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, will also be present.
The historical significance of the republic's birth is further highlighted by the role of the Czechoslovak Legions. These volunteer units, recruited from Czech communities in Russia, played a decisive role in securing independence through combat on the Eastern Front, particularly during the Battle of Zborov. Despite facing execution by Austro-Hungarian forces for treason, the legionnaires eventually traveled across Siberia to reach the Western Front, providing a vital military impulse to the diplomatic efforts of Masaryk and Edvard Beneš.
