Czechoslovak independence commemorations

Overview

Cultural institutions and local communities in the Czech Republic are organizing various events to mark the 108th anniversary of the founding of independent Czechoslovakia on October 28. In the Central Bohemian Region, celebrations coincide with Central Bohemian Region Day. Museums, galleries, and monuments—such as the T. G. Masaryk Memorial in Lány and the Czech Museum of Silver in Kutná Hora—are offering free admission or symbolic entry fees of one koruna. Programs include guided tours and exhibitions designed to highlight the history and personalities that shaped the state. In Kopřivnice, a memorial gathering is scheduled for October 27 at the Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk monument. The event will include a speech by Lubomír Sazovský of the Masaryk Democratic Movement and musical performances by the Cantus Venuste choir. Wreath-laying ceremonies will involve representatives from the city, the Czech Union of Freedom Fighters, and the Slovak Community. Other cities have prepared diverse programs: Přerov will host a concert by the Haná Brass Orchestra, an official ceremony at T. G. Masaryk Square, and a lantern procession. Plzeň is planning guided tours and a ‘Procession of Lights’ featuring a 3D light symphony at Republic Square. Additional historical reenactments are taking place in Nová Bystřice, where the Gepard Express steam train will transport visitors. The event features over 100 performers reenacting life during the transition from the Habsburg Monarchy to the Czechoslovak Republic. Due to national holiday regulations under Act No. 223/2016 Sb., large retail stores with a floor area exceeding 200 square meters are required to remain closed on October 28. Exceptions include smaller shops, gas stations, pharmacies, and outlets located at transport hubs.
