Extreme weather hits Europe with Mediterranean heat records and Czech storms

Extreme weather patterns are impacting Europe, characterized by record-breaking temperatures and severe storm activity. The Mediterranean Sea has reached an absolute surface temperature record of 28.5°C, with western regions seeing temperatures up to 32°C, significantly higher than long-term averages.

In the Czech Republic, a period of intense heat has been followed by a sharp transition to severe weather. After multiple stations recorded temperature records exceeding 37°C, a cold front is bringing heavy thunderstorms, potential supercells, hail, and high wind gusts of up to 90 km/h. These storms are expected to provide much-needed relief to drought-stricken areas, though they pose risks of flash flooding and falling trees.

Ongoing drought concerns persist in the region. Experts from CzechGlobe have warned that extreme drought is affecting major European river basins, including the Danube, Rhine, and Po. In the Czech Republic, water management authorities are monitoring reservoir levels closely to ensure stable supplies amidst high evaporation and low precipitation.
