Central Europe heatwave intensifies, impacts widen
Entities: Slovak Railway Company · Donio · Public‑Health Office of Slovakia (ÚVZ) · Administration for Protection and Rescue (URSZR) · Municipality of Radeče
Overview
After a brief cooling spell in early July, Central Europe again faced soaring temperatures. In the Czech Republic, forecasts from mid‑May through early June warned of rapid swings – from 0‑5 °C mornings to daytime highs of 20‑26 °C, then alternating rain, thunderstorms and brief warm spells up to 27 °C. The abrupt weekend drop of up to ten degrees spurred promotion of energy‑efficient cooling equipment as household electricity demand rose.
Health officials issued a heat‑acclimatization advisory for outdoor sport, urging early‑morning or evening activity, ample hydration and electrolyte use. By late July, a new heat wave pushed temperatures to 39 °C, setting July records in Plzeň‑Bolevci (39.4 °C). Fire‑risk alerts were heightened across Central Bohemia and south‑east Moravia, banning open fires and pyrotechnics. Prague opened air‑conditioned “cooling oases” at the Škoda Palace, providing water, seating and refreshments on July 31 and August 1.
In Slovakia, third‑degree heat warnings forecast >38 °C for early August. The Slovak Emergency Service logged 56 heat‑related ambulance calls on 31 July, many in Banská Bystrica, while the public‑health office reiterated water‑intake and indoor‑temperature guidance. Hungary reduced post office hours and equipped staff with cooling gear. Railway operator ZSSK reported significant delays on 31 July due to infrastructure strain. Trnava’s winter ice‑stadium continued to serve as a public cooling shelter, offering free drinking‑water fountains.
Overall, the region’s drought‑driven heatwave has amplified fire danger, strained health services, disrupted transport and prompted a network of public cooling facilities.
