Czech Republic faces cyanobacteria blooms and heat wave monitoring updates

Cyanobacteria blooms are affecting various water bodies across the Czech Republic, leading to swimming bans in several locations. In the Vysočina region, stations near Humpolec reported water quality so poor that bathing is prohibited. Specific sites including the Trnávka reservoir, Kachlička pond, and Sedlice reservoir have received low hygiene ratings. Other affected areas include the Břevnická reservoir, Domanínský pond, and the Orlík reservoir, where water is considered dangerous due to high toxin levels that may cause skin or respiratory issues.

In the Liberec region, Máchovo jezero is experiencing degraded water quality. Experts warn that cyanobacteria can form surface layers quickly and produce toxins harmful to healthy individuals. Even rainfall may not immediately improve conditions, as it can lead to a rapid decline in microbiological quality and increased infection risks.

In response to increasing climate risks, the CzechGlobe Institute of Global Change has updated its 'Heat Waves' website. The platform now provides detailed information on thermal stress in district towns, helping emergency services and the public prepare for extreme temperatures. The tool tracks heat wave intensity, duration, and trends in the Czech Republic since 2000, addressing the impact of urban heat islands and tropical nights on human health.
