Water safety and contamination alerts in Poland and Czechia
Overview
The summer of 2026 has seen persistent water safety challenges in Poland and the Czech Republic driven by heat and contamination. In Poland, the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate warned that rising summer temperatures increase the risk of Legionella bacteria in water systems, particularly in aerosols from showers, jacuzzis, and fountains. While public tap water meets EU standards, officials noted that local pipe conditions can affect quality, and a 2025 law requires municipalities to guarantee a three-day emergency water supply.
In the Czech Republic, cyanobacteria blooms have triggered widespread bathing bans. While some sites in the Frýdek‑Místek and Karviná districts remain suitable for swimming despite reduced visibility, others face strict prohibitions. High toxin levels at the Trnávka reservoir, Kachlička pond, Sedlice reservoir, and Domanínský pond pose risks of skin or respiratory issues. In the Vysočina region, water quality near Humpolec was reported as poor, and Máchovo jezero in the Liberec region has also experienced degraded quality.
Authorities continue to monitor these risks as warm weather and rainfall patterns influence microbiological quality. To assist with climate-related health risks, the CzechGlobe Institute of Global Change has updated its heat wave monitoring tools to track thermal stress and urban heat islands across the country.
