Czech Republic faces historic grain harvest drop as drought slashes yields
The Czech Statistical Office estimates the 2024 grain harvest at 6.39 million tonnes, a 16.9 % decline from the previous year and the lowest output in 14 years. Rapeseed output is projected at 808 000 tonnes, down more than 20 % and the weakest level in 21 years. Overall, basic cereal production is expected to fall about 17 % year‑on‑year.
Farmers could see revenue losses of 8‑20 billion Czech crowns due to lower yields and higher input costs such as fuel and fertiliser. Despite the shortfall, the Czech Republic holds substantial grain stocks from the prior harvest and can supplement supply through imports, so consumer prices are not expected to rise sharply in the short term. Experts warn that prolonged drought could increase feed and ingredient prices across the food chain later in the year.
