Czech Republic faces severe drought as rivers and reservoirs recede
Severe drought conditions are impacting water levels across the Czech Republic, affecting major reservoirs, rivers, and local municipalities.
In the Vltava basin, the Orlík reservoir is approaching minimum levels due to low inflows and high evaporation. Consequently, water release from Orlík will be restricted to a minimum of 40 cubic meters per second, with discharge shifting to the Slapy reservoir. While reservoir levels remain sufficient for critical functions like cooling the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, the lack of supplementary water threatens to lower Vltava flows in Prague to levels insufficient for wastewater dilution and ecosystem maintenance.
Regional impacts are widespread. In the Olomouc region, the Morava river's flow has dropped significantly to approximately three cubic meters per second, and many smaller tributaries have already dried up. Experts from Palacký University warn that without significant rainfall, more watercourses will vanish.
Local communities are also feeling the effects. In the municipality of Borů, officials have declared water conservation measures as local wells and reservoirs deplete, forcing residents to limit usage to maintain supply.
