Czech Republic implements active speed camera enforcement
Stationary speed cameras in the Czech Republic have entered active operation, leading to a significant increase in traffic fines. In the Buchlov Mountains on the I/50 road between Uherské Hradiště and Brno, authorities recorded 236 speeding violations within the first twenty days of operation. Drivers face fines ranging from 2,000 to 25,000 CZK, with potential driving bans for extreme speeding. Similar enforcement on the I/43 road near Kuřim resulted in approximately 1,700 fines in its first month.
In response to driving risks, the Czech Association of Insurers has launched a preventive campaign titled ‘Normal Driving Kills’. The initiative aims to highlight how routine decisions—such as checking a phone, ignoring fatigue, or slightly exceeding speed limits—can lead to fatal accidents. The campaign includes public installations of crashed vehicles in Prague, audiovisual communications, and a documentary film titled ‘The Only Second’ to illustrate the consequences of common driver errors.
