Traffic regulations and enforcement in Czechia and Slovakia
Overview
Traffic regulations and law enforcement in the Czech Republic and Slovakia continue to evolve through new penalties, legislative reforms, and intensified police operations.
In Slovakia, regulations introduced in September impose severe penalties for significant speeding, with fines up to 1,300 euros for exceeding limits by more than 50 km/h in municipalities or 60 km/h outside them. To prevent fatal accidents, the Slovak Police Force has launched heightened inspections focusing on speed, alcohol, and addictive substances.
In the Czech Republic, stationary speed cameras have entered active operation, causing a surge in fines on the I/50 and I/43 roads. To address driver behavior, the Czech Association of Insurers launched the ‘Normal Driving Kills’ campaign.
Law enforcement efforts recently escalated to manage the ‘Europe illegal season end 2026’ tuning car rally. Organized via social media, the event involved thousands of modified vehicles traveling toward Prague and Brno. In Prague, large gatherings occurred at locations including Čakovice, Zličín, Strahov, and Čestlice. Approximately 1,000 cars and 2,500 people gathered in Čakovice, causing significant traffic and public transport disruptions.
To manage the rally, authorities deployed highway police, customs police, drones, and helicopters equipped with thermal imaging. Following the operation, police reported 176 offenses, resulting in fines totaling 271,900 CZK. Notable incidents included one driver being detained for driving despite a court ban and two drivers testing positive for drugs. Seven vehicles were prohibited from further driving and two were towed. Officials described the operation as successful in deterring more severe illegal activities, noting that no serious accidents involving injuries or deaths occurred.
Meanwhile, long-term legislative reforms regarding driving license validity and highway speed limits for specific motorhomes remain under review by the Chamber of Deputies, with potential implementation in July 2027.
