Czech Republic budget debate centers on deficit and infrastructure spending

The Czech government is facing intense debate over its proposed budget, which includes a significant deficit. Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček defended the fiscal approach, arguing that reducing the deficit would necessitate cuts to essential sectors such as security, energy, and transport infrastructure. He noted that approximately 97 percent of the budget is composed of mandatory, statutory expenditures.

Opposition leader Vít Rakušan has criticized the planned deficit, labeling it an ‘economic crime.’ The National Budget Council has warned that loose fiscal policies could cause the impact on the debt brake to occur earlier than expected, shifting the timeline from 2037 to 2034.

Despite the fiscal tension, the government is prioritizing large-scale infrastructure projects. The Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) is set to receive a record 87 billion CZK from the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure next year. This funding is intended to support the construction of 90.8 kilometers of new highways and 50.3 kilometers of first-class roads, as well as various bypasses and highway expansions across the country.
