Central European energy market regulation and pricing

Overview

In the Czech Republic, the Energy Regulatory Office (ERÚ) implemented new monitoring requirements to increase price transparency. Under a new decree, major suppliers covering roughly 98 percent of households must provide detailed data on customer contracts. During this period, the provider E.ON introduced fixed-rate tariffs for new customers, reporting prices approximately 140 CZK per megawatt-hour lower than in March 2026.

By early September 2026, the regional energy landscape shifted toward higher wholesale costs and legislative updates. In Slovakia, amendments to the Energy Act took effect on September 1, introducing frameworks for flexible grid connections, electricity sharing among energy communities, and stricter rules for supplier contract transparency. The legislation allows producers to connect to the grid under limited capacity conditions if they install power management devices.

Concurrently, wholesale energy prices in the Czech Republic reached two-year highs. Between September 2025 and August 2026, annual electricity contracts rose by approximately 33.8 percent, while natural gas contracts increased by 56.4 percent. More recent data indicates even sharper year-on-year wholesale increases, with electricity up 47 percent and gas up 89 percent. Experts attribute these fluctuations to geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East.

While suppliers must secure at least 70 percent of energy for fixed-price customers in advance, the impact of rising costs is expected to reach end-consumers starting in January. In response to volatility, ČEZ has launched a dynamic tariff trial involving over 1,000 households. This tariff uses ten daily time slots to allow consumers to potentially save up to 50 percent by shifting high-energy activities to low-demand periods.
