Czech Republic introduces student parent support amid housing crisis

In the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs has introduced a new family policy tool called “hlídačkovné” (babysitting allowance). Effective September 1, this support provides young parents who have children during university studies with one-third of the minimum wage, approximately 7,500 CZK (300 EUR), to help balance education and parenthood.

Broader economic analyses highlight significant generational shifts. While younger generations generally enjoy higher incomes and better access to technology compared to their parents, they face severe challenges regarding housing affordability. In Prague, the cost of a standard 70-square-meter apartment has risen from roughly ten annual salaries in 2005 to 15 annual salaries today.

Economists note that rising rents and property prices are outstripping income growth, forcing young people to take on significantly higher debt. This has increased reliance on intergenerational assistance, where parents help children secure housing, potentially deepening inequality between those with family support and those without.
