Slovakia and Czech Republic announce minimum wage increases
Slovakia and the Czech Republic are implementing significant increases to their minimum wages.
In Slovakia, the minimum wage is set to rise to 972 EUR by January 2027. This change is driven by a new calculation mechanism that sets the wage at 60% of the average nominal monthly wage from two years prior. Labor Minister Erik Tomáš noted that this fulfills government and political commitments, potentially pushing the wage to 1,016 EUR by 2028. The increase affects approximately 180,000 workers and will also raise related night and weekend shift premiums.
In the Czech Republic, the minimum wage is projected to increase to 24,900 CZK by January 2027, an increase of 2,500 CZK. This would bring the minimum wage to 44.6% of the average wage. The Czech government is also proposing a reform of public sector salary scales to ensure no pay grade falls below the minimum wage. This automatic valorization mechanism aims to gradually increase the minimum wage to 47% of the average wage by 2029. The reform is supported by both unions and employers, though unions argue for even faster growth to reach 50%.
