Czech Republic moves to replace millions of old ID cards and driver licences by August 2026

The Czech Ministry of the Interior announced that identity cards issued no later than 30 June 2000, listed as "without limitation" and belonging to persons born after 31 December 1935, will cease to be valid after 2 August 2026. Holders must obtain a new card at their municipal office; after 3 August 2026 the old card will no longer be accepted as proof of identity.

The Ministry of Transport warned that more than 409 000 driver licences will expire in 2026, with the largest wave in August (53 627 licences). Applications can be submitted online via the Transport Portal up to 90 days before expiry, and the new plastic card can be delivered to a pick‑up box for a 100 CZK fee. "Hlavní výhodou je, že si řidič vyřídí doklady bez nutnosti jediné návštěvy úřadu," noted State Printing Office director Tomáš Hebelka. Driving with an expired licence can incur a on‑spot fine of up to 1 500 CZK and up to 5 000 CZK in administrative proceedings.
