Czech Republic pension payment and tax refund changes

Changes are coming to the pension payment system and tax refund calculations in the Czech Republic. Starting July 1, 2027, pension payments will transition from a sliding period system to a fixed calendar month system. This technical adjustment aims to make payments more understandable by ensuring that the pension amount paid on a specific date covers the entire calendar month.

Experts note that this change will eliminate confusion caused by annual valorization. Currently, some retirees receive a higher payment in January due to technical adjustments for the beginning of the year, which can lead to the misconception that their pension has decreased in subsequent months. Under the new system, valorization will be reflected directly in the January payment for the full month.

Regarding tax refunds, individuals opting for early retirement in early 2027 may see lower tax refunds. This is because the annual tax credit for taxpayers remains constant regardless of the number of months worked, but a refund can only be issued up to the amount of tax actually paid through monthly installments during the year.
