Czech Republic pension system faces sustainability challenges amid low senior poverty

Data from the OECD indicates that the Czech Republic maintains a relatively low rate of relative income poverty among seniors. Approximately 7.6 percent of people aged 65 and older in the Czech Republic live below the relative poverty threshold, a figure significantly lower than in the United Kingdom (around 15 percent) and the United States (nearly 23 percent).

Factors contributing to this include the Czech pension calculation method, which provides higher replacement rates for lower-income earners, and the fact that many Czech seniors own their homes, reducing the burden of commercial rent compared to Western European nations. However, high-income earners often face a more dramatic drop in living standards upon retirement.

Simultaneously, the Czech pension system faces long-term sustainability challenges due to an aging population. The increasing old-age dependency ratio—the imbalance between retirees and the working-age population contributing to the system—has prompted discussions regarding raising the retirement age and the potential role of foreign migration in stabilizing the workforce.
