Czech Republic political landscape and government structure
As of late 2026, the Czech Republic is governed by a coalition led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš of the ANO party. The ruling coalition includes ANO, the Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD), and Motorists for Themselves, holding 108 of the 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
President Petr Pavel serves as the head of state, with powers to appoint the prime minister and ministers, represent the state internationally, and veto ordinary legislation. Recent legislative activity includes a Chamber bill to transition public media funding from user fees to state funding, which would provide CZK 5.74 billion to Czech Television and CZK 2.065 billion to Czech Radio.
In recent Senate elections, opposition parties saw success through candidate cooperation. The STAN party secured ten senators, while the ODS and TOP 09 clubs obtained nine seats. In contrast, no government party won a Senate mandate, with SPD exiting in the first round and ANO failing to advance past the second round.
