Czech Senate election results and political aftermath

Overview

Following the conclusion of the Senate elections, political shifts are emerging across the Czech Republic. In the Znojmo and Přerov regions, Tomáš Třetina (TOP 09) and Jakub Navařík (Spolu coalition) secured victories. In Karviná, Petr Kazík defeated ANO candidate Lenka Brzyszkowská in a close race, representing a notable loss for the ANO movement in a traditionally strong area.

In the Žďár nad Sázavou district, Radek Černý (ODS) has announced intentions to file a motion with the Supreme Administrative Court to challenge the validity of the voting. Černý, who lost the second round to Josef Klement (KDU-ČSL) by a single vote, stated his objective is not to overturn the result but to “eliminate doubts and strengthen trust in the electoral system.”

Concurrently, the election outcomes have triggered coalition negotiations in Prague. The STAN party has presented a proposal to the Piráti party. STAN leader Petr Hlaváček expressed a preference for a three-party coalition that would also include Praha sobě, while Piráti leader Tereza Nislerová noted programmatic alignment between the groups, specifically regarding housing issues.

Broader political shifts are evident as the opposition parties saw success through candidate cooperation. The STAN party secured ten senators, while the ODS and TOP 09 clubs obtained nine seats. In contrast, no government party won a Senate mandate, with SPD exiting in the first round and ANO failing to advance past the second round.
