Czech Republic proposal to increase groundwater fees by 250%
A legislative amendment proposed by MP Karel Tureček (ANO) seeks to increase groundwater extraction fees in the Czech Republic from 2 CZK to 7 CZK per 1,000 liters. The proposal is being introduced as an amendment to the Act on Plant Protection, a move criticized by Central Bohemian Governor Petra Pecková as an inappropriate way to pass significant changes.
Under the current system, fees are split 50:50 between the state and regional governments. The new proposal would redirect all revenue to the state, with one-seventh going to the State Environmental Fund and six-sevenths to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Governor Pecková warned that this change would deprive regions of essential funding for water management projects, such as water mains, sewage systems, and wastewater treatment plants. She noted that the Central Bohemian Region could lose approximately 55 million CZK annually due to this shift. The Ministry of Agriculture has defended the increase, stating that groundwater is a precious resource that must be protected and that the additional funds will be used to improve national water management.
