Czech Republic water management and pricing developments

Overview

In the South Bohemian region, the South Bohemian Water Union announced a 5.4 percent increase in water prices for 2027, raising the average cost from 26.10 CZK to 27.50 CZK per cubic meter, excluding VAT. This adjustment is attributed to rising costs for electricity, chemicals, and surface water, alongside new state methodologies for infrastructure renewal. To combat drought, the state enterprise Povodí Vltavy also reduced the outflow from the Římov reservoir to maximize winter water retention.

Nationally, a legislative amendment proposed by MP Karel Tureček seeks to increase groundwater extraction fees from 2 CZK to 7 CZK per 1,000 liters. The proposal would redirect all fee revenue to the state, with portions allocated to the State Environmental Fund and the Ministry of Agriculture. This move has faced criticism from Central Bohemian Governor Petra Pecková, who warned that the shift could deprive regional governments of significant funding, estimated at 55 million CZK annually for the Central Bohemian Region, which is used for water mains, sewage, and wastewater treatment projects.
