Czech Republic proposes road traffic law reforms
The Czech Republic is preparing significant legislative changes to road traffic laws, currently undergoing review by the Chamber of Deputies and inter-ministerial consultation. If passed, the new regulations are expected to take effect in July 2027.
One major component involves expanding public access to digital, machine-readable traffic data. This initiative aims to align with European standards for intelligent transport systems, providing 27 categories of information including real-time traffic conditions, accidents, road closures, and parking availability. Data will be managed through the National Traffic Information System to support navigation apps and urban planning.
Additional reforms include extending the validity of newly issued driving licenses for various categories from 10 to 15 years. The proposal also increases the highway speed limit for certain motorhomes (weighing between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg) from 80 km/h to 100 km/h. Furthermore, the law seeks to improve the cross-border enforcement of traffic fines within the EU by expanding the range of punishable offenses and enhancing electronic data exchange between member states.
