Czech Republic proposes stricter residency rules for Ukrainians

The Czech government is planning to introduce stricter regulations regarding the residency of Ukrainian citizens. The proposed measures include the potential suspension of temporary protection for individuals who remain outside the Schengen Area for more than 30 days. This rule would also apply to those being deported from the Czech Republic due to administrative penalties.

Additionally, the Ministry of Transport is preparing an amendment that would require Ukrainian-registered vehicles to be registered in the national Road Vehicle Register (RSV), which would include mandatory technical inspections.

While the European Council has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU until March 4, 2028, the Czech proposals aim to tighten domestic controls. These changes could affect approximately 395,536 Ukrainian citizens currently under temporary protection in the country. Some political figures have also advocated for the complete removal of temporary protection and social benefits, suggesting that unemployed individuals should be required to return home once the war concludes.
