Czech Republic pushes forward D35 highway construction between Opatovice and Mohelnice

The Czech Republic is finalising its largest transport public‑private partnership project – the completion of the D35 motorway between Opatovice and Mohelnice. Three consortia submitted bids that differ by roughly CZK 4.8 billion (about 6.8 %), prompting officials to stress that evaluation must go beyond price to include experience, local knowledge and the ability to deliver and maintain the complex 35.4‑km stretch with its two tunnels and an additional 17‑km segment.

Construction on the Džbánov‑Litomyšl section, about 7.6 km long, began in April 2024. Budimex won the contract for CZK 3.42 billion and is laying asphalt, building bridge structures—including a 419‑metre bridge over the Končinský valley—and installing temporary road diversions. The works are scheduled to finish early 2027, with hopes of an earlier opening in late 2026. The upgraded D35 will provide a major alternative to the congested D1 corridor between Bohemia and Moravia.
