Czech Republic to access LUMI-AI European supercomputer

The Czech Republic will gain access to LUMI-AI, one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers designed for artificial intelligence. Through the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center at VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava, the country will be able to utilize computing capacities capable of training and operating advanced AI models.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has signed a contract for the procurement of the LUMI-AI system, with a total value of 387.8 million euros. The project is being implemented by the LUMI AI Factory consortium, which includes Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, Poland, and the Czech Republic. The system is scheduled to be deployed in the CSC data center in Kajaani, Finland, in the second half of 2027.

The Czech Republic is contributing 7.37 million euros to the project through its Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. LUMI-AI is expected to offer up to ten times the performance for AI and nearly double the performance for scientific computing compared to the current LUMI supercomputer. The infrastructure aims to support researchers, companies, and startups while strengthening European technological sovereignty.
