LUMI-AI supercomputer development in Europe
Overview
The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the LUMI AI Factory consortium have awarded a €387.8 million contract to the French company Bull to deliver the LUMI-AI supercomputer. Scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027 at the CSC – IT Center for Science facility in Kajaani, Finland, the system is intended to provide a tenfold increase in AI capacity and nearly double the high-performance computing capability of the existing LUMI supercomputer.
The hardware architecture will utilize AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and sixth-generation AMD EPYC 256-core processors. Technical partners include IBM for storage solutions and Nokia for data center networking. The project is funded equally by EuroHPC JU and a consortium of Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.
As part of the project, the Czech Republic will gain access to the system through the IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center at VŠB – Technical University of Ostrava. The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports is contributing €7.37 million to the initiative. The infrastructure is designed to support researchers, companies, and startups while strengthening European technological sovereignty.
Beyond industrial innovation and scientific research, the project aims to integrate LUMI-AI with the LUMI-IQ quantum computing platform to explore synergies between high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum technologies.
