Czech Republic to hire 285 new school psychologists

The Czech state plans to hire 285 additional school psychologists to address growing mental health concerns among students. This initiative follows a 2023 study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Czech School Inspectorate, which revealed significant psychological distress in ninth-grade students.

According to the study, 40% of ninth-graders exhibited moderate to severe depression, while 30% showed symptoms of moderate to severe anxiety. Additionally, over 50% of students reported diminished well-being, with symptoms appearing more frequently in girls than boys. Factors contributing to these issues include academic stress, heavy workloads, and time spent in online environments.

Despite the need, there is a long-standing shortage of professionals in schools. As of May 2026, only about one-fifth of primary schools had a school psychologist, a figure that is even lower for secondary schools. While state funding for support positions has been adjusted, schools continue to face difficulties in recruiting qualified personnel.
