Czech Republic warns of agricultural fire risks and soil damage

The Hasičský záchranný sbor ČR issued a regional alert for increased fire danger in agricultural areas, defining the period of heightened risk based on extreme weather and harvest or storage phases. Farmers are urged to monitor the temperature of stored crops, keep moisture below 16 %, and maintain equipment to prevent ignition.

The Agrární komora reports that larger fires can degrade soil structure, raise erosion risk and reduce fertility for several years, with pre‑harvest fires causing near‑total yield loss. In 2023, Czech fire services extinguished 1,581 agricultural fires, incurring damages of 354 million CZK, about 111 million CZK higher than the previous year. Officials Jan Doležal and Tomáš Trávníček recommend adjusting harvest times, cleaning machinery, and stricter safety protocols.
