Czech road authority launches major D4 bridge demolition and I/53 expansion projects

The Czech Republic’s Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) has begun a series of large‑scale road works. Workers have demolished an aging bridge over the D4 highway, clearing the way for a new structure that will cost several hundred million crowns.

Separately, the consortium M‑Silnice and IDS Olomouc won a public tender to rebuild a 20.6‑km stretch of the I/53 between Lechovice and Pohořelice. The contract, valued at 1.967 billion CZK—about 60 % of the original estimate—covers a partial conversion to a three‑lane alternating road, the construction of five grade‑separated interchanges, realignment work, and protective measures for local wildlife. Construction is slated to start in the third quarter of the year.

Both projects aim to improve safety and traffic flow in the South Moravian region and are part of a broader effort to modernise the national road network, including upgrades linked to the expansion of the Dukovany nuclear power plant.
