Czechia education system to undergo major reforms by 2026/27

The Czech education system is preparing for significant legislative and structural changes set to take effect during the 2026/27 school year. Key reforms include stricter regulations regarding the deferral of compulsory school attendance. Under new rules, deferrals will no longer be automatic for general immaturity but will require documentation from a physician or clinical psychologist, primarily for serious health reasons.

Financial and staffing changes are also being introduced. The so-called ‘index funding’ will allow schools with socially disadvantaged students to access additional resources, with over 222 million CZK allocated for social pedagogues and student support. Furthermore, every first-grade class with more than 15 students will be provided with a pedagogical assistant to support teachers.

Other upcoming developments include the implementation of a revised curriculum, the release of PISA survey results, and a national regulation regarding mobile phone use in schools, which is expected to be standardized by September 2027. This regulation will limit phone usage not only during lessons but also during breaks, in cafeterias, and in after-school clubs, with exceptions for medical needs or specific digital instruction.
