A week later, child‑development specialists shifted focus to the upcoming first‑grade year, warning that overprotective parenting can impede children’s emotional growth. They urged parents to set clear boundaries, let children experience manageable setbacks, and teach basic life skills and resilience rather than stressing academic perfection. By early August, psychotherapist Martin Zikmund expanded on these concerns, stating that shielding children from failure or conflict can hinder their transition to adulthood. He noted that “children need unconditional love and acceptance, but also the chance to experience setbacks.” Primary school teachers echoed this, observing increased parental anxiety and suggesting that focus should remain on basic life skills and emotional resilience rather than academic performance. In late August, new regulatory changes further complicated the transition. A major reform has tightened rules for deferring compulsory school attendance, limiting deferrals primarily to serious medical reasons. This shift is expected to result in approximately 115,000 first‑graders entering school this year. Additionally, experts have raised concerns regarding the physical transition from high-movement kindergarten settings to sedentary classrooms. Physiotherapist Iva Bílková recommended tools like gym balls or air-filled cushions to support spinal health and suggested silicone writing tool attachments to prevent dental damage from children chewing on pencils to manage stress. Looking toward the 2026/27 school year, the Czech education system is preparing for broader structural and legislative reforms. Beyond the stricter rules for school attendance deferrals, which now require documentation from a physician or clinical psychologist, new financial measures are being introduced.
