Czech schools to receive extra funding to curb intergenerational poverty

From September, Czech primary schools will receive targeted state financing to support socially disadvantaged pupils. The money can be used for social pedagogue salaries, learning aids, equipment and breakfast programs, aiming to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty that research says is especially strong in the Czech Republic.

Experts stress that education is the most cost‑effective way to lift families out of poverty. Sociologist Daniel Hůle of Člověk v tísni argues schools must take greater responsibility for children whose parents are unable to provide adequate support, and calls for complementary measures such as reforms to consumer‑credit legislation. The funding initiative is presented as an investment that will improve both individual life chances and the broader economy.
