Czech seniors' applications for early retirement rise amid policy changes

Requests for early retirement in the Czech Republic have started to increase again. The Czech Social Security Administration (ČSSZ) reports that the number of monthly applications is roughly double that of the same period a year earlier. After a peak of nearly 180,000 new early‑retirement requests in 2022‑2023, applications fell sharply, but they are now climbing as the rules introduced on 1 January 2024 soften pension reductions for insured persons with at least 45 years of contributions.

The administration attributes the renewed interest partly to difficulties seniors face in finding employment, as highlighted by the Senior Council’s chairwoman Lenka Desátová. An analysis by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs notes that about half of people approaching retirement age are already out of work, underscoring the social and economic pressures behind the trend.
