Czech superdávka rollout adds gambling ban for benefit recipients

The Czech Republic’s new unified social benefit, the "superdávka," now automatically enrolls recipients of the livelihood component and their household members in a national gambling‑exclusion register. As a result, these individuals are barred from all legal casino, betting and online gambling activities for the duration of their benefit receipt. In July the register listed 236,228 people; after the rule took effect in August the number rose to 299,362, with an expected modest decline later as only livelihood‑component recipients remain on the list.

The programme’s uptake is also surging. In May 2023 the state paid roughly 47,100 superdávky, rising to about 49,800 in June. By August the number of households receiving the benefit is projected to exceed 300,000 – including an estimated 66,000 new applicants and more than 230,000 former‑benefit households ("starožadatelé"). Monthly outlays for the latter group could reach about 1.86 billion CZK, pushing total annual spending toward the 2‑billion‑CZK mark.
