Jihočeské divadlo faces space and funding crisis

Jihočeské divadlo is facing significant operational challenges regarding its long-term future, primarily due to a lack of adequate performance space and funding. Following its departure from the Metropol cultural center due to deteriorating technical conditions, the institution no longer has access to a large-scale stage suitable for major opera and ballet productions. The current historical building only offers a capacity of approximately 250 seats, which the management describes as a temporary solution.

Director Martina Schlegelová has highlighted that the institution's stability is threatened by the absence of the South Bohemian Region as a second founder. While the theatre has transitioned into a public cultural institution, the expected regional financial support has not materialized. This lack of involvement complicates necessary investments in the theatre's historical building, production facilities, and the Small Theatre.

Regional officials are currently negotiating the potential purchase of the Metropol building to provide a permanent home for the theatre. If these negotiations fail, alternative plans involve developing facilities within the Viscofan area. The current model of sharing limited space among three professional ensembles—drama, opera, and ballet—is considered unsustainable for long-term professional operations.
