Czech and Slovak theater season and institutional changes

Overview

Theatrical institutions in Prague, Bratislava, and other Czech regions are navigating new performance seasons alongside structural and leadership changes.

In Prague and Bratislava, venues have unveiled upcoming programming. Prague’s Divadlo v Dlouhé is launching an immersive production for children, while Bratislava’s Divadlo P. O. Hviezdoslava (DPOH) has themed its 2026/2027 season ‘Homes and Refuges’, featuring premieres ranging from puppet shows to science fiction.

In the Czech Republic, institutional transitions continue to impact operations. Brno’s Divadlo Radost is preparing for a leadership transition in January, with incoming director Tereza Ondrová planning to modernize the theater through increased youth involvement.

Jihočeské divadlo (South Bohemian Theatre) is facing an escalating crisis regarding its long-term viability. Following its departure from the DK Metropol due to safety risks, the institution lacks a large-scale stage suitable for major opera and ballet productions. The current historical building, which offers only approximately 250 seats, is viewed by management as a temporary solution. Director Martina Schlegelová has noted that stability is threatened because the South Bohemian Region has not acted as a second founder, leaving expected regional financial support unfulfilled. This funding gap hinders necessary investments in production facilities and the historical building.

Regional officials are currently negotiating the potential purchase of the Metropol building to serve as a permanent home. If these negotiations fail, alternative plans involve developing facilities within the Viscofan area. Management warns that the current model of sharing limited space among drama, opera, and ballet ensembles is unsustainable for long-term professional operations.
