Czech zoos celebrate births of rare crown pigeon and cheetah cubs

Zoo Ostrava succeeded after a fifteen‑year effort in breeding the Sclater’s crowned pigeon, the world’s largest pigeon. The chick, measuring about 75 cm and weighing over 2.5 kg, fled the nest within four weeks and now walks the public Volière Papua. It is only the fourth surviving pigeon chick among 27 European zoos that keep the species.

Meanwhile, Zoo Praha announced the birth of five healthy cheetah cubs. The mother, a seven‑year‑old female rescued from poor health, has recovered and is caring for the cubs in an outdoor enclosure. The cubs, now a month old, are gaining their first teeth and remain dependent on their mother’s milk. Visitors are expected to see them later this summer.
