Czech zoos breeding rare species

Overview

In late June 2026, Czech zoological institutions reported a string of rare-species births. Olomouc Zoo welcomed its first red-panda twins following a five-year breeding program, Ostrava Zoo succeeded in hatching a Sclater’s crowned pigeon after fifteen years of effort, and Zoo Praha announced five cheetah cubs from a rescued mother.

By mid-July, the crowned-pigeon chick had fled the nest and was exploring the public Volière Papua at Ostrava, while the cheetah cubs, then approximately one month old, were developing teeth and remained dependent on their mother’s milk.

A further milestone arrived at the end of July when Safari Park Dvůr Králové announced the birth of a rare bear cub. Concurrently, Czech ornithologists recorded a historic breeding season for golden eagles, documenting 34 territorial pairs and 38 fledged eaglets—the highest numbers on record.

In August, conservation successes continued. Prague Zoo successfully raised a juvenile casqueucost using artificial incubation to protect eggs from the male; the chick was eventually introduced to its parents and is now housed in an enclosure with impalas. Liberec Zoo achieved a milestone by breeding seven critically endangered phantom leaf frogs, using controlled temperature and artificial rain to bolster the European captive population.

Additionally, Safari Park Dvůr Králové reported the August 8 birth of a Böhm zebra, noting the foal’s initially light-colored stripes. The park has recorded nearly 450 births this year, including giraffes, antelopes, and a rare Cape honey badger. The park also successfully bred four blue-winged goose chicks, a species native to Ethiopia that is considered very rare in global zoo populations.
