Czechia advances railway upgrades and Dresden-Prague rail link
The Czech Republic is advancing major railway infrastructure projects following a budget allocation of 77.6 billion CZK for Správa železnic. Key domestic projects include the modernization of the Hradec Králové to Týniště nad Orlicí line, which will increase speeds from 100 to 160 km/h and add a second track. Other priority works involve the electrification and modernization of lines between Otrokovice and Zlín, as well as between Ostrava and Frýdek-Místek.
On the international front, Czech Transport Minister Ivan Bednárik announced that a bilateral agreement with Germany regarding the high-speed rail link between Prague and Dresden is expected to be signed in February. A central component of this corridor is the approximately 30-kilometer Ore Mountains Tunnel, which would be the longest of its kind in Central Europe. The project is intended to be part of a larger international corridor connecting Berlin, Prague, and Vienna. Securing this agreement is critical for applying for European Union co-financing, which could cover up to 80 percent of the costs.
