Czech railway and urban transit infrastructure developments

Overview

The Czech Republic continues to advance significant railway and urban transit infrastructure developments. Regarding regional rail, the Central Bohemian Region, the City of Prague, and České dráhy (ČD) have signed a 165.17 billion CZK contract for passenger services in the Prague metropolitan area. Škoda Group’s 36.39 billion CZK bid for the EMU 400 electric fleet is currently being challenged by Stadler Rail at the Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS).

Railway modernization is accelerating. Správa železnic has completed upgrades at Hrádek nad Nisou station as part of a 1.24 billion CZK initiative. The Ministry of Transport has approved plans to adapt major lines for 740-meter-long freight trains, involving siding extensions and station modernizations with costs potentially exceeding 118 billion CZK. Additionally, modernization of the Kostelec–Slavonice line is moving forward, with work scheduled to begin in 2028 to reduce travel times.

High-speed rail (VRT) and capacity expansions are progressing. Správa železnic has launched a tender for the Běchovice–Libně corridor to add a fourth track, separating suburban and long-distance traffic. In Prague, the Smíchov station is undergoing reconstruction, including a new 6.2 billion CZK transport terminal to integrate rail, metro, and bus services by 2033. The SPOLU coalition has also proposed accelerating the city ring road and the Hloubětín tunnel.

Urban transit projects include the renewal of the Libeň Bridge to restore tram connections and the expansion of the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) tram network.
