Częstochowa to annex 580 hectares from neighboring Poczesna by 2028

On 31 July 2026 the Polish government approved a regulation expanding the administrative borders of the city of Częstochowa. Effective 1 January 2028, about 580 hectares of land currently belonging to the gmina of Poczesna will be incorporated into the city.

The annexed area includes mainly investment zones and the site of the municipal waste‑handling facility in Sobuczyn, which serves a regional role. Approximately 200‑250 residents live on the transferred land, while most existing residential parcels will stay within Poczesna.

City officials, including acting mayor Zdzisław Wolski and vice‑mayors Łukasz Kot and Łukasz Pabiś, said the change supports Częstochowa’s “New Częstochowa” development plan, creating larger, contiguous zones for industrial, production and logistics projects and securing the waste‑management plant’s operation. They noted the decision reflects strategic needs and the majority vote in a local referendum, though turnout exceeded 50 % and a majority opposed the change.

Poczesna authorities have announced they will pursue legal action, filing an appeal to the appropriate tribunal, arguing the annexation disregards the wishes of local residents.
