Dacia Sandero leads European car sales rankings
The Dacia Sandero remains the most sought-after new car in Europe, according to Dataforce analysis for the period of January to August 2026. With 145,424 registrations, it holds a lead of over 12,000 units ahead of the Volkswagen Golf, which recorded 133,249 units.
While the Sandero maintains its top position, its sales volume saw an 11.2% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The European market shows strong competition from Volkswagen, which holds three spots in the top ten with the Golf, T-Roc, and Tiguan. Other notable models in the top ten include the Renault Clio, Tesla Model Y—the only purely electric vehicle in the top tier—and various models from Peugeot and Opel.
Regarding consumer preferences for seniors, ADAC highlights that criteria often differ from general market trends. While popular models like the Dacia Sandero, Renault Scénic, and VW Golf dominate general sales, seniors prioritize specific functional features. These include vehicle dimensions (maximum 4.5 meters long and at least 1.5 meters high), an upright seating position with a height of at least 47 centimeters, ease of entry and exit, uncomplicated controls, and a loading edge height not exceeding 78 centimeters.
