Daedalus supercomputer to boost Greek research capabilities

The recently inaugurated Daedalus supercomputer, boasting a performance of 85.69 PetaFlops, is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of Greek universities, research centers, and startups. Managed by the National Technological Infrastructure Network (GRNET), the system offers a cost-effective and secure alternative to commercial cloud services from providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, which often present data confidentiality challenges for European research programs.

While waiting for the formal distribution procedures to be established, Greek entities such as ELKEFA (EKETA) and various startups have been seeking access to international supercomputers like Sweden’s ARRHENIUS or Germany’s JUPITER via EuroHPC. To prepare for the local transition, the Aristotle University of Macedonia (AUTh) has begun mapping the needs of the research community. User access to Daedalus is scheduled to begin gradually in December following full system parameterization.
