Greece inaugurates Daidalos supercomputer in Lavrio

Overview

Greece has officially inaugurated the Daidalos supercomputer at the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park of the National Technical University of Athens. Developed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and implemented by the National Technological Infrastructure Network (GRNET), the system is housed in the repurposed historic building of the former French Mining Company power station.

With a measured performance of 85.69 petaflops, Daidalos ranks 31st on the global TOP500 list as of June 2026 and 23rd in the Green500 ranking for energy efficiency. The project, which carries a budget of 58.9 million euros, is funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU program, the Recovery and Resilience Facility, and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. The infrastructure utilizes NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips and features direct liquid cooling technology.

Serving as the computing core for the PHAROS AI Factory, the infrastructure provides essential resources for universities, research centers, startups, SMEs, and public agencies to support complex scientific simulations, big data analysis, and the development of generative AI and large language models. Applications are expected to span fields such as medical research, climate modeling, energy, transportation, and cybersecurity.

By hosting these resources domestically, Greece aims to reduce its dependence on foreign computing infrastructure and provide a secure environment for processing sensitive data in sectors such as medical research, public administration, and climate simulation. Following the inauguration, the system is expected to offer a secure, cost-effective alternative to commercial cloud services from providers such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. User access is scheduled to begin gradually in December 2026 following full system parameterization.
