Daegu University Institute wins award for AIoT system aiding developmental disabilities

The Daegu University Special Education and Rehabilitation Science Institute, led by Professor Park Kyung‑ok, received the Excellent Award in the social‑science category of the 2026 Humanities & Social Sciences People‑Centric Research Achievement Contest organized by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The award recognized the institute’s AIoT‑based 24‑hour education and care support system for individuals with developmental disabilities, featuring the B‑Mon AI behavior‑recognition system and the DACARE integrated platform that use cameras and IoT sensors to automatically detect challenging behaviors. Trained on tens of thousands of video recordings, the AI model has demonstrated reductions in challenging behavior and improvements in functional communication across multiple agencies. The research has been listed twice among the Ministry of Education’s “Top 50 Achievements,” incorporated into a K‑MOOC course, adopted as a basis for support projects by the North Gyeongsang provincial government, and led to patent filings and inter‑agency agreements. At the awards ceremony held at Chungnam National University during the opening of the 2026 World Humanities & Social Sciences Academic Conference, Park also took office as the new president of the Korean Special Education Society.
