Daejon Love arrested for $1.3M romance and investment fraud scheme
Daejon Love has been arrested by federal agents at the Boise Airport following allegations of a $1.3 million romance and investment scam. Love is facing federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.
According to a 47-page criminal complaint, Love allegedly used dating apps like Hinge, Bumble, and Tinder to pose as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and a wealthy Swiss real estate developer. He reportedly targeted at least 26 victims across California, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, though the FBI suggests the actual number of victims may be higher. To bolster his deception, Love allegedly used social media, official team gear, and a specialized app to create fraudulent screenshots of bank accounts containing balances exceeding $30 million.
Love allegedly worked with 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan, who impersonated a financial adviser to help facilitate the scheme. The investigation revealed that Love even attempted to contact New England Patriots legend Julian Edelman via Instagram, claiming he had been released by the 49ers and seeking a meeting with the Patriots.
Each count of wire fraud carries a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Love remains in federal custody awaiting transfer to Oregon.
