Daejon Love romance and investment fraud case

Overview

Daejon Love and 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan face federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud following an alleged $1.3 million romance and investment fraud scheme. Love reportedly used dating apps to pose as a wealthy Swiss real estate developer and a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. Tactics included custom 49ers helmets, staged video calls, and fabricated bank statements showing balances potentially exceeding $30 million.

While the investigation initially identified 26 victims, the FBI has since confirmed the number of potential victims has risen to more than 60. Love was arrested near the Boise Airport on August 24 while wearing San Francisco 49ers apparel.

New allegations have emerged regarding the San Francisco 49ers’ awareness of the scheme. While the team previously stated they had no prior knowledge of Love until being notified by the FBI, a woman claiming to be a victim, Gwen Herndon, alleges she warned the organization via their website on December 20, 2025. Herndon claims the team responded to her inquiry by stating they “take reports of misrepresentation seriously” but declined to comment on specific individuals. Herndon stated she ceased communication with the team due to disappointment that they did not openly condemn Love’s actions.

Portland FBI Special Agent in Charge Douglas Olson has encouraged potential victims to come forward “without fear of embarrassment” as investigators work to verify new reports.

Netflix has announced it will produce a new installment of its ‘Untold’ documentary series titled ‘Untold: Wide Deceiver,’ which will cover the case. The documentary is expected to feature firsthand accounts from the 61 women who have come forward regarding the alleged scam.
